Can I put a Shimano 105 crankset on a montain bike?
I have an old mountain bike (Shogun Trail breaker circa 1996) that has a bent big cog. I want to use it as a run about bike for running up the shops etc. Can I use a Shimano 105 crank set? What do I need to watch out for when setting it up?
No problems with doing that just check front derailleur clearance and also your chain length. Depending on what size your crank set was if it was a mountain bike you may need to add a few links to your chain to account for the larger chain-ring.
Yes you can. You will need to reposition and adjust the front derailleur.
You may also need to change the bottom bracket to get the crank-set t fit and in the correct position.
Just check its installed that it is in roughly the same position. for the chain to be in line

Why do you want to do that? I don’t know if the BB size matches, but also the gearing is completely different, mtb have smaller gears than roadbikes, so it will feel different. Also, this would probably mean you need a longer chain than what you currently have, so you would need a new chain (unless you have some spare links, but I think that’s unlikely).

I guess everyone feels this would work fine…
but I would have thought there would be issues with the small chainring on the 105 (triple?) possibly not clearing the chainstay.
