How do I pick out a new crankset for my mountain bike?
I own a Specialized Rockhopper mountain bike and I'm looking at changing out the crankset. It is a 24 speed bike and the only thing I've changed out is the pedals to a Shimano set.
I am not sure what crankset will work with my bike or how to determine what the gear ratio is. I'd like to possible go with bigger gears in the front as I never use 1st gear on my current bike.
I wouldn't bother with changing the crank set. I don't use the first gear on my bike either but its there for when I do need it.

You have to axe why you want to change. If the answer is just because you dont use the small ring, then maybe you need a different kind of bike altogether, or challenge yourself more on uphills. I cruise mostly in the middle and large sproket, but I need the granny for hills or really rough stuff…………
The ratio’s are just the number of teeth on the drive sprockets divided by the number of teeth on the cassette. For example, if you are on the middle sprocket (usually about 32 teeth) and in the middle of the cassette cluster (something like 25 teeth), your ratio is 32/25. If you repeat this for all combinations , you’ll see that you get a few ratios that are nearly the same from different gears.
