shimano durace or 105 crankset and bottom bracket for my road bike?

Posted on 24th July 2009 by admin in road bike crankset

I would like to change the crankset of my road bike. 105 is good value but should I go for durace. I ride 3 times a week and total around 150km a week. My speed is around 28kph over an hour ride. Is there a difference between the two crankset. Also, should I change the 105 pedal I am using to durace

Dura Ace. Then you won't have to upgrade.

  1. shimano 105 is the baseline of shimano for high performance. a serious cyclist could compete with a 105 equipped bike and not lose performance. ultegra and dura ace will be lighter weight and have a better finish, but as far as stiffness, trueness, and the like you would have to be riding at a very high level to notice any difference in your speed. i always say buy the best stuff you can stomach the price of, so if the price of dura ace doesn’t scare you, go for it! you don’t have to upgrade pedals to enjoy your new crankset, as long as they’re still running smooth.

  2. Dura Ace is Shimano’s top of the line product. It is Shimano’s most finely finished and lightest product line. Dura Ace is most appreciated by racers for whom every gram is important. Two steps down from Dura Ace, 105 is Shimano’s value oriented product line. It is a very good quality product that will provide years of service, but it is not as light as Dura Ace. Still 105 is appreciated by many racers who value their dollars moreso than grams.

The big problem with a new crankset is it will almost certainly force you to replace your entire drive train. The new chainrings will probably not mate well with your old chain. Thus, you’ll also need to buy a new chain when you get the new crankset. Of course, a new chain is not likely to mate up real well with your cassette, either. So, you’ll need a new cassette, as well. If your drive train is worn out, this is the time to upgrade.

Unless your drive train is worn out, though, this isn’t the first place I’d look to improve my bicycle’s performance. You may be able to shave off some grams, but it is going to be a pretty expensive operation - especially if you go with Dura Ace.

Frankly, the first place to spend in order to get a performance enhancement is a set of lightweight wheels and tires. The reduction of rotational mass will make your bike much more snappy.
